Belford - Stornaway, Feb 12. - The Commanding Officer of a war vessel reports that the steamer Belford, of Sunderland, from Barry for New York, in ballast, drifted ashore at Smadh Point, Island of Islay, on Feb. 8. He boarded the vessel on Feb. 10 and found her in a very bad position and apparently with bottom seriously damaged, foredeck buckled and part of starboard bulwarks gone; bridge washed away, officers' quarters on starboard side smashed in, holds full of water and sea washing in and out. Found ship's log (scrap) and noted vessel had lost propellor on Jan. 30, in lat. 54 19N., long. 11 45W. It had apparently been stripped by having come in contact with some object. One boat had been lowered, the others apparently had been washed out of the davits. Took chronometer and two sextants, also a medicine chest and what papers were left in master's room. Vessel's certificates and register could not be found. Everything is in the hands of the Receiver of Wreck, Ballinaby.
